May 21, 1991 ART INSTITUTE STUDENT COMPETES IN CITY OF PITTSBURGH MARATHON

Drew Norman, a second year Visual Communications major at The Art Institute of Pittsburgh and a native of Apple Creek, finished with a time of 3:30 and placed 312th out of a 1900 man field at the May 5th City of Pittsburgh Marathon. The son of Sandra Norman of Apple Creek, he is a 1989 graduate of Waynedale High School. Though most people may consider marathon running a bit demanding, Drew enjoys running because it’s good for the mind and body, it helps him to relieve stress and he appreciates the challenge of the marathon’s 26-miles. His first marathon was last year’s Pittsburgh Marathon and, in a November race in Columbus, OH with a time of 3:09 he qualified to run the Boston Marathon. Also in Pittsburgh he has run the annual Great Race and this year he finished 6th in the Earth Day Race. His summers are filled with all types of races, mostly for charitable organizations such as the United Way. Besides running, his commercial art studies can be quite demanding as well, but he has managed to keep his career goals in perspective in maintaining a 3.7 grade point average. He also works in the school’s Resource Center/Library. Drew hopes to pursue a career in illustration where he might have an opportunity “to do some really cool stuff for Disney or maybe the movie industry”. Believing that nothing is impossible, Drew says that his philosophy for success is that “all things can be accomplished if you just set your mind to them.”
